Appendix A Summary
I am extremely late to these summaries, and because of it and not reading the eBook, I learned about networking later than one would expect me to. I learned more about networking in my CIS 121 class, though I had forgotten a decent chunk of it. Latent learning might help me to recall what I have forgotten, although I could not remember that network interface cards were involved in networking. I should have remembered that client computers could link to one another, but I could not have guessed that client computers could use nodes to link to servers. While it seems interesting, I argue that it is mildly inconvenient, although I suppose it can be argued that it helps not take up as many ethernet cables for the server. Also, I finally learn that PC is for “personal computer.”
I used to wonder how old-timey phones worked without the Internet, and it turns out that cables that are out of sight were utilized, so that interests me. Fiber-optic cable is an interesting one, as while all the other cables mentioned before this use electricity, this cable uses lasers, which I feel is interesting but also unreliable. I learned from my CIS 121 class that it is effective for 300 feet of distance, but any further than that makes the cable less effective, probably because the light from the laser cannot go any further. Then there are wireless connections, which I guess is cool, but I far prefer wired connections over anything else. Besides generated waves being easier to interfere, I find wireless to be somewhat unreliable, and I like keeping everything plugged in; that is why my devices will never die anytime soon.
